Pilot Profile – Alan Coombes

Alan Coombes Profile

I was fortunate enough to be taken on as a Pilot trainee in 1999 and following a successful apprenticeship became authorised in May 2000. Last year I became authorised as a river pilot so now am able to do any job that may come my way both on the channel and river.

I served my cadetship with Andrew Weir back in the 1980’s and then joined the Army Maritime for 5 years before coming back to sea with the RFA and P&O Ferries prior to starting at Bristol.

When not working I like to play a lot of tennis and have recently passed my motorbike test so when the fair weather appears it’s 2 wheels not 4!

Great visit to @bristolport from @BorisJohnson this afternoon, meeting our apprentices and taking the helm of our tugboat whilst learning about how the port generates in excess of half a billion to regional GDP #bristolsglobalgateway #WestonGateway #UKMPG #BPA #maritime2050
